In 2018-19, 32% of Sarasota County third graders and 37% of Charlotte County’s were not reading at grade level. Rotarians consider this unacceptable because after the third grade, students read to learn. To help teachers, the Rotary Club of Sarasota Foundation, the charitable arm of the Rotary Club of Sarasota, stepped up its grant spending for the ROTARY READING PROJECT (Combining Kindergarten Readiness Bags and One Book Initiative.)
In cooperation with the Rotary Clubs of Sarasota County*, and in partnership with Suncoast Campaign for Grade Level Reading, the Mote Scientific Foundation, and Rotary District 6960, the Rotary Reading Project supplies Kindergartner Readiness Bags to all Sarasota County kindergarteners and books to students and/or teachers in grades 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Rotarians are encouraging all of Florida’s Suncoast citizens to help the 32 and 37 percent students, which in turn help other students. You can help by contributing as little as $5, but a $25 contribution would supply two kindergartners with Readiness Bags or twenty (20) first graders with their own book.
